Title: General Maintenance
Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor
Hours per week: 37.5
The employee performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in at least two complex and/or highly skilled trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of buildings and related equipment and machinery.
The employee functions at the sub-journey level in a trade such as HVAC technician, carpenter, plumber, welder or small engine repairman. In addition, an employee performs a variety of other tasks during a substantial portion of the normal work schedule in other trade areas, at least one of which is significantly different from his primary trade. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written work orders or may result from other maintenance or repair work performed. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion is given final review to determine compliance with work orders and adherence to established maintenance and repair standards. Employees shall perform other duties required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work
- Experience in areas related to the assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
- The employee must possess journeyman level of knowledge and expertise over a wide range of mechanicals systems
- The work will require lifting of equipment and tools on a regular basis
- The employee in required to be able to lift 50 pounds And must be able to apply torque to a wrench or valve handle
- The employee must also possess a thorough knowledge of Electrical and Refrigeration theory
- Additional 2 years related experience in facilities maintenance and mechanical systems repair
- Proficiency in operating equipment such as forklift, pipe threading equipment, etc

Responsibilities
- The Division of Facilities Maintenance functions are to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of Dare County Schools
- Provides help to and training for maintenance mechanics in the proper performance of corrective repairs to various control and energy management systems
- Consequence of error vary with the type of equipment being repaired
- Minor errors may result in equipment not performing as designed by the manufacture
- The employee is given supervision under the direction of the Maintenance supervisor
- Must reference assembly instructions to properly assemble pumps, exhaust fans, air compressors, motors, air handlers, bearing assemblies, and boiler burners
- Must follow service policies of equipment manufacture to properly service equipment
- During the course of work, the employee will come in to contact with students, facility, staff and visitors to the various campus’
- It is Imperative the employee present a calm, professional appearance and demeanor
- The employee will need have to from time to time investigate complaints by student, faculty and staff
- Responds to Emergency and after hour calls on a rotating basis
Physical Effort
- Routine work involves significant bending, stretching and lifting
- The employee will oftentimes be making repairs to pumps, and various equipment in these extreme conditions
- They will exercise constant visual attention while completing task
- Carelessness while performing task including the use of power tools could result in the injuries to others
- The employee is responsible to be aware of and respond to any unsafe practices in the workplace
- The employee must perform as a trainer and mentor for fellow employees while performing manual labor of their own
Requirements for Advancement - The employee must meet established criteria for advancement in pay and assignment. Specific criteria for each employee will be contained in employee evaluation program documents. Among these are:
- Obtaining additional licenses and/or certifications which have a direct application to the work assignment.
- Demonstration of the skills necessary to successfully perform the functions of the next advancement position.
