Position Description
Orchestra, Band, and Chorus Teacher
Reports to: Assigned Principals (on locations) with
Program Supervision from the District Administrator
Salary: State Salary Plus Local Supplement
Purpose: To teach basic musical skills to students of varying degrees of proficiency,
building a strong foundation for more advanced strings/orchestra skills, band instruments, and chorus.
Required Qualifications:
- Hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Educator’s License in K-12 Music Instruction
Responsibilities:
- The Music Teacher is responsible for preparing students in music and string instruction in multiple grade levels (9-12).
- Responsible for teaching all string instruments – proper posture, hand position, instrument carriage, proper tone production, bowing and plucking, proper finger patterns, etc.
- Provide sound music reading instruction so all students can read the notes on the staff –identify the letter name and produce the correct pitch on their respective instrument independently.
- Provide rhythmic instructions so all students can count and clap rhythmic patterns independently.
- Develop lesson plans based on the music curriculum of the NCSCOS goals and students’ needs.
- Differentiate instruction so all learning styles are included and every student is reached.
- Evaluate student progress based on formal and informal assessments to inform instruction.
- Grade students and input the data into the computer-based grading program, PowerSchool.
- Attend meetings and workshops to stay current with educational practice. Build a cohesive music program
- Provide a safe, effective classroom environment that is focused on learning and student growth.
- Establish and maintain timely effective written/oral communication with students, parents, and building and district-level staff.
- Create and maintain positive relations with students, parents, staff, and community
- Exercise good judgment when implementing school district policies, procedures, guidelines, and laws.
- Serve as a role model for all students and within the school community.
- Keep organized classroom spaces, inventory, attendance, and equipment inventory.
- Work effectively with diverse students and staff of various backgrounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- K-12 music teacher certification
- The primary instrument of study is an instrument
- Degree in Music Education with a focus on instrumental music
- Successful teaching experience working in a diverse setting preferred
- Successful experience developing a string program where all students read music and perform on their instrument independently
- Successful experience teaching beginning students
